The Telecom Audit Is Dead. Mostly.

Leading Cost Reduction Efforts Now Proactive, Not Reactive

Everyone knows about telecom audits. A third party billing expert comes in, finds all the previous mistakes made by the nasty carriers, and puts the savings right back on your bottom line. The auditor gets a cut of the savings and everyone is happy with the "free" money. It's a story that has been played out many times over the past 20 years, often with great satisfaction by the auditor and the client.

But the underlying premise for running audits is that companies can't effectively resolve billing errors in real time, or that companies can't remedy these problems themselves because they are just too messy and time-consuming. We disagree. Strongly.

It's true that TelAssess has, and still does, provide audit services. There are times when they are the only solution to a specific problem. But we always tell our audit clients that there are superior and higher-ROI solutions for addressing telecom cost controls, and that we hope to make this the last audit they ever have to engage in.

Let's face it, audits are unpredictable, and the benefits are short-lived since billing errors creep back into the picture almost immediately. Because the audit firm takes all the risk and can sometimes come up empty, they charge a pretty hefty contingency fee (we do, too!) on funds they do recover. If those are your hard-earned dollars being recovered, you may be disappointed at having to give up a large chunk of your savings.

Why continue allowing the carriers to hold onto your overpayments, then battling with them for aging recoveries and splitting the proceeds? Why not keep all the recovered funds and savings when carriers improperly bill you, and why not improve your telemanagement capability at the same time? That's what telecom automation software is doing for leading companies of all sizes (typically any spend over $1M annually justifies the investment) across the country.

Other major enterprise business processes have become automated (HR, AP, etc.), so why not telecom? The economics and benefits are equally rewarding for telecom, but the transition is much simpler to implement. ASP options make getting started non-disruptive and nearly immediate, and customers wanting to host the application internally have that option as well.

With automated telemanagement capability your electronically-received invoices get audited instantly, reconciliation tools are built into the application, and you can short pay and/or resolve billing problems before the payments go out the door in the first place.

With that kind of power and control now available, TelAssess believes that old-fashioned audits just don't make good business sense in most cases. That's why telecom audits are dead. Mostly.
